Coaching is different than therapy.
I am so glad Chris sat down to have a chat with me about his experiences with coaching. He is a true testament of how coaching is different than therapy, and can be a great tool to help someone through stressful times in their life.
Coaching for RPCVs Kampong Cham, Cambodia, 2012.
I was the doctor in the TB project led by Doctors without Borders.
Chris was the Peace Corps volunteer in town.
In Kampong Cham, Chris rotated with me in the TB wards.
Just not too long ago, March 20th, 2021, Chris finds out where he matched for his Primary Care medical residency spot. Chris and I have been coaching throughout his medical school years the last 2 years.
He rocked the personal statement and his interviews for his application for residency and is now excited to find out where he matched; as his coach, so am I!
Most people are a nervous wreck before match day. Not Chris. He will soon find out where he will be an intern, with an MD behind his name, and all.
Chris is an RPCV, just like the RPCVs at DOL.
As a result of coaching, Chris has come from anxiety, uncertainty, imposter syndrome to confidence and empowerment. He remains playful; that, we never changed. As it is a medical diagnosis, Chris has come to stop judging his anxiety and rather, come to accept it.
He wasn’t able to do this in therapy. In coaching we can overcome obstacles and challenges or we can journey together toward goals and aspirations. It’s all possible in coaching.
